Meeting with the principal and on of the veteran teacher's of Humanities Prep High School illuminated a major challenge of alternative schools: How does a school culture survive and maintain it’s authentic school culture despite changes in staff, school environment and policy?
Furthermore, how do you address the discrepancy between a school’s mission (based upon it's intentions and ideals) with reality?
During this visit I would've loved to have the opportunity to observe an actual classroom and speak with students directly. While I thought speaking with a teacher and administrator provided excellent insight into how a school comes together, I felt it was very one-sided and could've been better supported through classroom observations or a student panel.
